The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today denounced the
killing of Tanzanian Daudi Mwangosi on 2 September and urged an
investigation into the case.
"I am deeply concerned
by the killing of Daudi Mwangosi and call on the authorities to
investigate his death and bring those responsible to justice," the
Director-General said. "It is essential for democracy and rule of law
that journalists be allowed to carry out their duties and exercise their
right to free speech safely."
Daudi Mwangosi, 40,
was a reporter for Channel Ten TV. He was killed while a demonstration
he was covering in Nyololo Village in the central region of Iringa was
being dispersed.
