AGREEMENT IN CHICAGO TEACHERS STRIKE

As the drama over the Chicago's teacher contract unfolded, district and union officials cited base salary increases amounting to 2 or 3 percent per year.

Details of the tentative agreement show that total raise packages are more lucrative for many teachers. Boosted by traditional bumps built into the salary schedule for experience and additional education, some Chicago Public Schools teachers will earn raises worth about 25 percent over three years, records show.

That said, the average teacher, who has 14 years of experience and a master's degree or higher, will get more modest 7.5 to 9.6 percent wage increases over the three years, ending with a salary that ranges from $95,000 to $103,000 — near the top of the pay scale. And the raises are not as generous as those laid out in the previous contract.
